BIRD Foundation News

One of AICC’s  most important relationships is with BIRD—the U.S.- Israel Bi-national Industrial Research & Development Foundation that offers financial grant support for joint venture R&D projects between American and Israeli companies.  Chamber President Tom Glaser is BIRD’s Southeast representative.  BIRD has several initiatives underway that are of particular interest to companies in our region:

Two Southeast projects are being considered for funding: a mini-grant related to the carpet industry and a solar project that is being evaluated for a BIRD Energy grant between one of the region’s top research universities and an Israeli startup.  Decisions on funding are expected by mid-September.

  • BIRD’s business development director from Israel, Dr. Ron Maron, will visit Atlanta on September 4-5.  His primary interest is in meeting research leaders and companies connected to Georgia Tech’s Aware Home initiative.  Meetings are also being arranged with the Atlanta Pediatric Device Consortium and local medical device companies that are potential partners for BIRD projects with Israeli companies.
  • BIRD is focusing on Neurotechnology, Israel’s national initiative announced by President Shimon Peres.  They have organized a Neurotechnology Conference to be held in Washington, DC on September 12th.  AICC has compiled a database of researchers, practitoners, and companies dealing with brain technologies who have been invited to participate.  Serving on the program are two of our members—Imad Younis, CEO of Alpha Omega, our 2012 Eagle Star Israeli Company of the Year, and Dr. Jacobo Mintzer, Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina.
  • BIRD’s call for proposals for its next round of funding is September 23rd for executive summaries and October 23rd for final proposals.  Grant awards for this round will be made in December.

“We’re very proud of our close relationship with BIRD and pleased to represent this important organization in the Southeast.  The benefits to both Israel and our region are very meaningful,” said Glaser.  For information on BIRD’s activities and incentives, contact him tomg@birdf.com.
