The latest installment of Conexx’s Professional & Business Seminar featured a topic many of us know well: Apnea. Held on December 8 and hosted by Shared Space/Commercial Property, the event featured a case study of Itamar Medical, a world leader in sleep apnea management solutions to cardiology patients. Shaul Sharoni, Itamar Medical COO, was on hand to discuss not only the ground-breaking apnea technology, but the company’s move from Boston to Atlanta.
Sleep apnea is extremely prevalent, occurring in as many as 18 million Americans alone. That means that approximately 1 in every 15 Americans, or 6.62% of the total American population have some sort of sleep disorder, such as apnea. But what many people might not be aware of is the link between cardiovascular disease and sleep apnea. Symptoms of sleep apnea can include snoring and fatigue, but sleep disorders can also have cardiological impacts. Itamar Medical is providing solutions to this unmet need in cardiology.
Itamar is pioneering at-home sleep testing. Patients are able to sleep in their own bed and do not need assistance administering the technology. The WatchPAT, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved device, is a wrist-mounted application that uses a probe clipped on the finger to diagnose and monitor sleep apnea at home. Itamar Medical was also a front page story in the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
The US is the growth engine for Itamar because of the extremely high rate of cardiovascular disease in this country. Itamar medical chose to relocate from Boston to Metro Atlanta for the location, convenience, weather and incentives that Atlanta and the southeast offer. The harsh northeast winters became a problem for the company’s distribution – Atlanta’s mild winters offered a welcome solution.
In addition to the company’s headquarters, Atlanta will also be home to Itamar Medical’s sales and product management teams and the company plans to create more than 30 jobs in the coming months.
